History Jugendherberge Lam

Laying of the foundation stone on May 9, 1938
“A youth hostel is being built every 30 km”
Timber and building land were provided free of charge by the municipality of Lam.

=>Opened in 1939 as a youth hostel with the aim of providing German youth with affordable accommodation and good food. Transition from the German Youth Hostel Association to the Hitler Jugend.
As part of the Kinderland deportation, the “Ostmarkjugendherberge” served as a safe haven for the children.

=> 1945 - 1947 after the American invasion, soldiers of the US Army found accommodation here. In the period after the Second World War, German refugees were also temporarily accommodated.

=> In the 50s the concept changed towards school classes, similar to school camps.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the focus on school classes was moved away and it was also opened up to other travelers.

=> On August 31, 2015, the youth hostel was closed for economic reasons. The house has seen a lot and endured around 85,000 overnight stays between 1988 and 2015.

=> The youth hostel was sold privately in 2015. Since the plans to use the building as asylum seeker accommodation for unaccompanied young people did not come to fruition, it remained empty until 2021.
When another change of ownership took place in March 2021, the hostel was brought back to life.

=> Since March 16, 2022, Ukrainian refugees have found accommodation in the hostel. This is also the birth of the “Hostello Lam”
May the house also be prepared for your onslaught.
With this in mind, we wish you a nice and relaxing stay!
